Just another DJ…trying to change the world one mix at a time…
If I had to pick a favorite album of 2010 (for me at least) it would be Shame Shame by Dr. Dog. As a DJ, I play a lot of music, and I have a tendency to shorten songs or to reference songs in a mix. I also try not to play more than one song from any artist on the same mix or performance.
Because of these limits I find myself jumping around a lot from song to song and artist to artist when I am listening to music. Thus, I am ultra-aware of it when I find myself enjoying a particular album from start to finish. Shame Shame by Dr. Dog is one of those albums. It has been on steady rotation on my Ipod, I grade papers, commute, make breakfast for my kids, hang out with my friends and just chill all while listening to the album.
There was this one moment in the listening where the music started to fade into the background a bit, but then I discovered the sheer poetry of the lyrics. The concepts of self and universality, love and loneliness, and comfort and despair all revealed in poetic expression melded with creative music just resonates with me.
